Tips for delegates to CD or State NOT attempting to move on:

Print this out (and some copies) and take them with you to help promote the LGBT candidates! It falls to us to try and get LGBT representation at the National Convention. Remember to maximize your vote.
Talk up the LGBT candidates, encourage others to vote for them.
Tips for Candidates:

Print this out (and some copies) and take them with you to help you promote yourself and the other LGBT candidates!
Go to your house district meetings, and tell people about your candidacy
Go to Democratic party functions and tell people about your candidacy. When you go to CD and/or State conventions …Stand out, tell people about your candidacy. Make flyers, buttons and pass them out. Promote! Promote! Promote!
Though late, contact as many delegates to your Congressional and/or State conventions as you can promoting your candidacy.
Get people to talk you up. If you know people that are going to CD and State and not running themselves. Have them tell people about your candidacy.

Democratic National Convention:

1. Discussed the delegate process, Tish Maes (previous national delegate) relayed her previous experience. For those interested in running as a national delegate, it is important to begin running right away.

2. Discussed the need of delegates to be in touch with office seekers early. Ask them about issues important to our community.

3. Discussed the need to provide to the leadership the names of the Stonewall delegates running and provide that to membership or on webpage. ExComm: to put out call for delegates to put their name forward for dissemination. The goal is to make sure that our members and community are well represented.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender organizations in Colorado oppose transgender exclusion from ENDA

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: [Monday, October 1, 2007]

Contact: Jessica Bowers
Communications Director
press@stonewalldems.org

Denver, CO – The following statement was released by nine Colorado-based organizations working to advance equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. The statement is in response to recent news stories indicating a shift away from the inclusion of transgender protections in the national Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA):

Our organizations share the belief that transgender protections must be included in the federal ENDA currently being debated in committee in the U.S. House of Representatives.

These necessary protections do not only impact those who identify as transgender. Too often, individuals face discrimination because they do not fit gender "norms". These people, straight and gay, deserve protections in the workplace.

We call on all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people as well as our friends and family to contact their congressional representatives and urge their support for an ENDA that is inclusive of transgender protections.

Please join us in standing with our trans brothers and sisters.

Ryan Acker, Executive Director, Pikes Peak Gay and Lesbian Community Center;
Kirsten Spielmann, Interim Executive Director, Boulder Pride;
Jeffrey Shaw, Chair, Colorado Stonewall Democrats;
Cathryn L. Hazouri, Executive Director, ACLU of Colorado;
Kate Bowman, Chair, Board of Directors, Gender Identity Center of Colorado;
Jen Lowe, President, Board of Directors, Lambda Community Center;
Karen Bachman, Chair, Colorado Stonewall Democrats Transgender Caucus;
Equal Rights Colorado;
The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center of Colorado;

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: [Thursday, September 27, 2007]

Contact: Jessica Bowers
Communications Director
press@stonewalldems.org

Denver, CO – In response to recent news stories indicating that some U.S. House of Representatives leaders are considering the removal of transgender protections from the national Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), the Colorado Stonewall Democrats (CSD) wish to reiterate their position that both gender identity and sexual orientation must be included in any meaningful version of ENDA.

In a joint statement, CSD Chair Jeffrey Shaw and Vice-Chair Karen Bachman “applaud the statement issued earlier today by a coalition of LGBT rights groups – which included the National Stonewall Democrats – where each organization stated that their position against exclusion of transgender rights from ENDA remains clear and consistent.”

“Protection against gender identity or expression based discrimination benefits all LGBT Americans,” added Jessica Bowers, CSD Communications Director. “Much of the discrimination directed against gay, lesbian, and bisexual members of our community is based on our perceived variance from gender norms that narrowly define how women or men are ‘supposed’ to act, speak, dress, or carry themselves.”

“Political expedience is not an acceptable reason for excluding trans protections from this bill,” said Shaw. “Whether the bill moves forward with or without transgender protections, we will continue our efforts to educate members of the Democratic Party on the importance of being inclusive of the rights of all LGBT people.”

Colorado Stonewall Democrats urge all LGBT Coloradoans and their allies to contact their state representatives and express their opposition to a non-trans-inclusive ENDA.

Measure's Passage Important to LGBT People

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 27, 2005

Denver, CO - Colorado Stonewall Democrats announce their endorsement of The Colorado Economic Recovery Act; a measure appearing on the Nov. 1 ballot as Referenda C&D. Through a resolution adopted by the statewide Democratic LGBT group’s board of directors in August, Stonewall joined over 800 organizations in giving Referenda C&D its endorsement.

“Seeking the passage of Referenda C&D is something Stonewall sees as important to our community in particular,” said Mark Ferrandino, Co-Chair. “Without voters approving the measure, we anticipate seeing sharp cuts in funding for education and for HIV-related services. Our chances of passing legislation in Colorado that move LGBT equality issues forward will also greatly diminish should Referenda C&D fail.”

Beyond cuts to healthcare, and consequently HIV-related services, and education, Stonewall has noted that advances for LGBT equality through legislative pathways would be difficult to garner. Bills such as the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which was ultimately vetoed by Governor Bill Owens last May, would face even tougher prospects of becoming law. With a shrinking state budget, the money would simply not be there to pay for ENDA’s enforcement. “When there is no money there to enforce a law, it makes it pretty difficult to get it passed,” Ferrandino noted.

Referenda C&D would allow the state government to retain tax surpluses over five years and authorize bonds to help the state catch up on capital improvements. The current fiscal crisis is a result of declining revenues due to economic recession ratcheting the budget down coupled with the TABOR amendment’s restrictions on growth of the state’s base budget. Referendum C authorizes the time-out from TABOR while Referendum D authorizes the bonds for capital improvements.

Without passage of the voter-referred measure, state legislators will have to trim an additional $319 million from the state’s fiscal year 2007 budget according to the nonpartisan Legislative council.
