LA City Council: Adopt Tenant & Worker Protections

Stonewall Democratic Club Urges LA City Council to Adopt Package of Tenant & Worker Protections

The Council will hold an emergency meeting on Friday, March 27th, 2020 at 11:00am and will be open for public comment via email and telephone

The Stonewall Democratic Club strongly endorses the package of tenant and worker protections under consideration by the Los Angeles City Council at its emergency meeting on Friday, March 27, 2020. We also encourage and urge our partners in the California state legislature to resume meeting in the immediate future and to augment these local measures with statewide relief. Millions of Californians will go to sleep tonight with fear and uncertainty, and we need all jurisdictions across the state working in tandem with statewide leadership to bring immediate protections to all Californians, especially those who are already our most vulnerable.

The Coronavirus pandemic has presented everyday Americans with unprecedented challenges and in many ways exposed the vulnerabilities in our economy and health systems. Swift action is needed to address these vulnerabilities and to ensure the economic safety and health of our cities and citizens.

The emergency meeting will be open to members of the public, who may comment on the proposals by phoning in or sending an email. We are calling on Stonewall members to voice support for, and for the City Council to act swiftly to provide protections to, renters and workers in the Los Angeles area.

Los Angeles, CA – Yesterday, the LA Registrar-Recorder approved a petition calling for signatures to potentially recall Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón. The Stonewall Democratic Club endorsed Gascón in his bid to replace Jackie Lacey last November and Los Angeles Democrats agreed, voting overwhelmingly to bring change to LA's failing criminal justice system. We stand by this endorsement and strongly oppose these recall efforts.

"Gascón has made good on his promise to hold criminals accountable while moving Los Angeles forward towards a restorative justice model. The same bad-faith actors who support the bogus recall of Governor Gavin Newsom are now attempting to circumvent the will of the people and burn millions of taxpayer dollars to have their way," said Stonewall President Lester Aponte.

Stonewall will fight this recall and ensure that democracy prevails here in LA County.
