STATEMENT BY THE STONEWALL DEMOCRATIC CLUB ON THE PASSING OF JUSTICE RUTH BADER GINSBURG
As the second woman ever to be confirmed to the Supreme Court, she became a symbol and an inspiration for women around the world. Her vision and her tenacity bring to mind the words of George Bernard Shaw: “There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?” Such was Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She never stopped fighting and she died doing what she loved best, working to dispense justice and equality for all Americans.
We are all understandably concerned that the hard won rights of women, LGBTQ+, people of color, immigrants, are all in grave danger. The conservative agenda of dismantling our right to exist, control our own government, and live freely through the courts could not be more clear. Our lives and our livelihoods are in mortal danger.
We urge the U.S. Senate to respect Justice Ginsburg’s last wish and not confirm a new Justice until a new President is inaugurated on January 20, 2021. We also pledge to continue our efforts to elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in November, as well as a Democratic Senate and House. Justice is indeed on the ballot. It is up to all of us to honor and carry on Justice Ginsburg’s legacy.
Today, we mourn. Tomorrow, we fight.

Los Angeles, CA – Yesterday, the LA Registrar-Recorder approved a petition calling for signatures to potentially recall Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón. The Stonewall Democratic Club endorsed Gascón in his bid to replace Jackie Lacey last November and Los Angeles Democrats agreed, voting overwhelmingly to bring change to LA's failing criminal justice system. We stand by this endorsement and strongly oppose these recall efforts.
"Gascón has made good on his promise to hold criminals accountable while moving Los Angeles forward towards a restorative justice model. The same bad-faith actors who support the bogus recall of Governor Gavin Newsom are now attempting to circumvent the will of the people and burn millions of taxpayer dollars to have their way," said Stonewall President Lester Aponte.
Stonewall will fight this recall and ensure that democracy prevails here in LA County.
