WOMEN’S RIGHTS IN MISOGYNISTIC TIMES

A conversation about Pakistan and the United States hosted by the Pasadena Chapter of the United Nations Association

Pasadena, CA, Sept. 2, 2026 – The United Nations Association (UNA) Pasadena Chapter is hosting a discussion called WOMEN’S RIGHTS IN MISOGYNISTIC TIMES at 6pm on September 16, 2026 at the Maxwell House in Pasadena located at

55 S Grand Ave, Pasadena, CA 91105. The event is free and will be livestreamed.

Congressmember Judy Chu will deliver welcoming remarks for the event (pre-recorded).

UNA Pasadena Chapter board member Jennifer Hall Lee will be in discussion with her friend and colleague Dr. Munazza Yaqoob who will be attending virtually from Islamabad, Pakistan. The discussion will center on themes of gender in politics, reproductive rights, social and religious norms, and global patriarchy.

Lee said, “Dr. Yaqoob and I have worked on the rights of women in Pakistan and the United States for over 13 years and now with the overturning of Roe v. Wade the time is perfect for a public discussion on the status of women’s rights in both countries.”

Dr. Munazza Yaqoob said, “Conversations about our rights need to include the norms and traditions that sustain misogyny. Then we can build solidarity in order to create change.”

UNA Pasadena Chapter President Danny Peterson said, “These discussions are especially important because they allow us to listen across cultures, learn from one another, and better understand both the progress that has been made and the work that remains.”

The UNA Pasadena Chapter is committed to supporting Sustainable Development Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

In 2023 Lee and Yaqoob collaborated on “Women Beyond Borders: A Visual Study of Women’s Lives in Pakistan” shown at Pasadena City College in summer of 2024. That exhibit was funded in part by UNA Pasadena Chapter and Pasadena City College.

If you choose to attend in person there is street parking available. The event is free, but donations are more than welcome.
